If the Golden Square Mile owes its charm to history and architecture, it can credit its name to trade and commerce which put the “golden” in our dear Square Mile. First established by late 18th century upperclass families as a peaceful alternative to the bustling then-downtown of Old Port, the neighborhood blossomed around the turn of the 20th century, when Montréal was Canada’s commercial hub and 80 percent of the nation’s wealth was held by the city’s mostly-Scottish industrial tycoons. Today, the area stays true to its namesake as the home to a collection of Montréal’s top firms, luxury hotels, upscale shops and fine restaurants.
